Real Life Application
Refraction of Light Waves of Different Frequencies
The fact that the sky appears blue is a real-life application for refraction of light. If you ask students the sky is blue, a common answer is that the oceans are reflecting sunlight, making the sky appear blue. I tell them that the color is due to water, but it is the water droplets in the atmosphere scattering the high frequency blue wavelengths of light. I discuss how the various frequencies of the visible spectrum result in different amounts of refraction. This is why we see rainbows. The Blue Sky-Red Sunset demo is a very good addition to this discussion.
