In the section on optics, I would begin with a discussion on eyeglasses and the eye. 

A discussion on correcting near and farsightedness introduces students to the idea of focal length, convex and concave lenses.  This can also motivate some simple ray tracing as well as an

inquiry of the meaning of a diopter.
