Real-Life Application
“Jello Optics”
My favorite way to introduce students to the topic of optics is to use Jello. Specifically, unflavored gelatin. I make a pan of it (Important! If the directions ask for 1 cup, I only use ½ to 2/3. You want it thick). I cut it into 2x2 or so squares and give it to the kids with pen lasers. Refraction, total internal reflection (if you do it right), etc. Works great. Cheap and much more fun than the standard optics set. Also leads to a great discussion on where Jello comes from!
